Q--Although I read many times that rustproofing was a waste of money, the salesman convinced my wife that it would make a much quieter ride so I went along with this add-on. Now, I am having problems with the power windows. I had the driver’s side repaired under warranty in 1997. It failed again in 1999 and 2000 for which I had to pay for repairs. Now it is malfunctioning again. I took a Polaroid of the driver’s side window during the last replacement and you can see that the bottom is covered with compound. Four motors on a vehicle seems odd.
A--Odd indeed, despite the fact that four is an even number. Rustproofing has its place and may be beneficial for someone who expects to keep their vehicle well beyond the factory warranty, but it can cause problems if not applied properly. Overspray can gum up the window regulators, which eventually can put an extra load on the motors, causing premature wear.
